Lake Synevir is the biggest lake in the Carpathian mountains, situated at a height of 989 meters above the sea level. It is a part of National Park “Synevir”. The lake is located in Mizhhirskyi district of Zakarpatska region of Ukraine.

Lake Synevir is justly considered to be the most valuable natural treasure of the National Park “Synevir”. And also it is a visiting card of the Ukrainian Carpathians. The lake is located at a height of 989 meters above the sea level. Its area is 4-5 hectares. The average depth is 10.8 meters, the maximum depth is 22 meters. Because of the altitude and depth even in the hottest weather only few upper meters of the water become warm.
There is a legend which tells us that picturesque lake was formed of the tears. Earl’s daughter Syn was crying on the place where his beloved shepherd Vyr had been killed with the stony boulder. Earl ordered to kill him because of the low social origin.
In fact the lake was formed as a result of strong shift caused by the earthquake about 10 thousand years ago. Mountain rocks grew at an altitude of 989 meters on the way of the rapid stream forming a kind of dam. They blocked a narrow valley. A basin appeared on this place. It was filled with water of three streams. Today in this clear water there are a lot of lake trout, rainbow trout and stream trout.
The total area of the open water is about 5 hectares. Maximum depth is 22 meters. The landscapes are incredibly picturesque and wonderful. Steep slopes are covered with thin fir-trees that are 140-160 years old. The branches of the trees fall directly to the water surface. In the middle of the lake there is a small island. It looks like a pupil of the blue eye and has an area of few meters. Hence its mane is Sea Eye.
People try to add something to the beauty of the nature using their creative imagination. Architect Yuri Solomin has successfully built watching places in the surrounding landscape. There is a sculpture composition “Syn and Vyr” carved from the mahogany made by the sculptors Ivan Brodyn and Mykhailo Sanych. It is situated on the peninsula and has a height of 13 meters.
